Story

Antique Japanese hand woven textile dyed with natural indigo. This textile was made using the traditional katazome resist dye technique: a hand cut stencil is used to apply a resist paste to the textile before dipping into the dye vat. This process is repeated for each dye used. Many antique Japanese cotton textiles served a domestic utilitarian purpose, this textile was likely once part of a futon cover.
