The daughter of two literature professors, Natalie Pfau was born in Buffalo, NY and moved seven times by age 11. Both sides of her family–German and Colombian–include artists, photographers and writers. Natalie’s travels began early. She regularly visited family in Germany and spent nearly a year living in Venice, Italy, where her mother taught Shakespeare. These early experiences were enormously formative and led to the creation of The Rich & Strange.
After obtaining her BS in Business Administration from UNC Chapel Hill, Natalie spent her early 20s traveling, living and working in places including Montana, Kauai and Colombia, always dreaming of a way to satisfy her obsession for design, interiors and travel.
Natalie later moved to Austin, Texas and spent the year working with her aunt Carola, an antique textile collector and dealer. Carola’s influence on Natalie was profound; she fell in love with textiles and, being an independent spirit like her aunt, decided to pursue her own venture.
A few months later Natalie was in Guatemala and Mexico finding pieces to create The Rich & Strange's first collection.
Transform your every day
into something Rich & Strange
Vintage and antique goods create their own allure. Our most rare textile finds are never altered or cut in any way. These pieces are meant to be enjoyed for display in your home.
We repurpose vintage textiles to create one of a kind pillows. This transformation extends the life of increasingly rare artisanal work that might otherwise be lost or forgotten. All of our repurposed vintage pillows are backed with antique handspun European linen and come with an eco-friendly fiber pillow insert.
For our contemporary pieces we collaborate with artisans who are experts in their craft. These artisans use the traditional weaving, dyeing and sewing techniques practiced in their culture for centuries. Our collaborations hinge on mutual respect, admiration and transparency.
