Story

Backstrap looms have been used since ancient times to weave narrow strips of fabric. These strips are often hand sewn together to form a larger textile. Designs are created by tying, stitching or clamping the undyed fabric or by using wax as a resist before dipping into the dye vat. Botanical dyes, in this case indigo, color the textile a deeper blue with each successive dip. Once the process is complete the resist is removed to reveal the textile's unique design.
